               This report is an update assessment of accounting and auditing practices in the Philippines as a continuation of the joint initiative of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to prepare Reports on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC).  

Outgoing WB Country Director Cites Progress and Reforms in DepEd

               MANILA, July 4, 2007 – Outgoing World Bank Country Director, Joachim von Amsberg, cited the reform progress in the Department of Education (DepEd) that have brought gains to the Philippine Government and the millions of Filipino schoolchildren. Mr. von Amsberg met with Secretary Jesli Lapus and other DepEd officials before leaving for his new post as World Bank Country Director for Indonesia.

Philippines: $5-M Grant to Improve Water Pollution Control In Metro Manila

               MANILA, June 26, 2007 – A US$5 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the Manila Third Sewerage Project (MTSP) was approved today by the World Bank’s Board of Directors. The grant aims to identify much-needed changes in policies and practices in order to attract private investments in the country’s wastewater sector. It will also help increase the effectiveness of the agencies responsible for water pollution control through improved coordination as well as promote innovative, simple and effective wastewater treatment techniques. This additional grant funding will complement the World Bank-assisted MTSP.

               Six Asia-Pacific economies rank among the top 20 in the world on ease of doing business, according to a new report from the World Bank Group. However, East Asian nations still impose the highest costs on enforcing business contracts of any region in the world and have among the highest costs of firing workers.

               The new Country Director of the World Bank for the Philippines, Joachim von Amsberg, is hopeful about the Philippine’s development prospects, if the country decisively confronts its difficult fiscal situation.
