Transportation
Are you an Urban LGU?
Is there traffic congestion in your city? what can you do about it?
- public transport users - installing jeepney only lanes and bus only lanes to let them
travel more efficiently
- pedestrians - improving side-walks; pedestrian crossings, adding trees and landscaping
to make it more attractive to walk
- cyclists - provision for safe bicycle lanes
- keeping your air clean by monitoring vehicles belching diesel
- installing traffic lights to improve traffic flow and road safety
- car-poolers/ridesharers
- telecommuters
Department of
Public Works and Highways (DPWH)
The DPWH is
the Philippine government agency involved with the expansion of the countrys
transport.
The Institute of
Transportation Engineers (ITE)
ITE offers technical information on road construction and other infrastructure
projects. It works closely with government legislators in formulating policies geared
towards improving road systems to reduce adverse environmental impacts and road accidents,
and to promote the efficient utilization of resources. The site has a monthly news journal
featuring developments in safety, technology and innovations in road building and other
infrastructure projects, as well as issues affecting the sector. It also has links to
institutions and government agencies involved in this sector around the world.
The Texas
Transportation Institute (TTI)
TTI advocates research and technology transfer as a solution to transport related
issues. The site features articles on recent developments in road construction and
materials that improve travel safety and minimize adverse environmental impacts. A search
engine located in the website offers access to an extensive database of people, products
and research studies on addressing transport related problems. TTI also sponsors seminars
and conferences aimed at disseminating information on current issues affecting the
transportation sector.
Traffic
Calming Measures
Paris Busway
Here is an example of a with-flow one lane busway recently implemented in Paris on one of
the busy streets down town. The width of the lane is 4.3m including the physical
separator. It decreased the road capacity for the MVs. The speed increased for the buses,
and, depending on the corridors, decreased for the MVs. This program is being expanded to
cover completed routes.

The
World Bank's Urban Transport Group
The mission of the transport group in the Bank is to assist clients to reduce poverty by improving the efficiency and equity of transport policy and interventions. We will work with the public and private sector and communities to enhance the capacity of transport institutions to provide sustainable infrastructure and services. Our webpages provide a rich resource of analysis, best practice, publications, statistics & other knowledge resources.
The
World Bank's Rural Transport website
Are you a rural LGU? What can be done about the rural roads? Check out this site for a
comprehensive knowledge base addressing strategic issues in rural transport.
Institution
of Civil Engineers Library
This is the largest on-line library on civil engineering works and construction found
in the United Kingdom. It carries some of the oldest printed data available (up to 500
years old), and has an extensive list of resources for the researcher. As an added
service, the site provides research assistance to users who send in their queries on
specific topics.
The National
Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA)
The NHTSA is the foremost authority on traffic safety and administration in the US. The
site posts the most current regulations governing road construction and related
infrastructure. Technical information made into law by the NHTSA is considered the
pre-eminent global standard for roadworthiness and safety emulated by many other foreign
governments. Though focusing more on safety issues affecting the vehicle/driver, it also
gives insights on how road systems must be built to minimize the risks of accident.
